Australian Retail Futures: Developing our workforce for the future
We have always known that our people are the greatest resource for Australian Retail.
Until now there has never been a considered, structured approach to articulating the needs of our industry, planning our workforce and for its development.
Driven by the needs of our industry, our Industry Skills Council – Service Skills Australia - is collaborating with all the industry representative bodies to develop a workforce strategy for Australian Retail.
This strategy will result in a comprehensive workforce plan for our future which will help individual retailers to get the people they need to build a sustainable future.
It will explore:
- What might the Retail Industry look like in 2020?
- What jobs will there be in such an industry?
- How can we develop people to fill these jobs?
- How can we grow managers and leaders for such an industry?
- How can the Retail Industry attract and retain talent now and in the future?
- How can Retail position itself with government so that its contribution to the economy and community is appropriately valued?
This project comes at a critical time for Retail and it is crucial that the final outcomes are supported by industry. With an anticipated delivery date of March 2013, the strategy seeks to ensure wide input from industry through forums and workshops, online engagement, desk top research and scenario building.
It will result in a set of agreed insights into our future that can then be used to inform recommendations for our workforce - policy and practice.
The process is designed to ensure that the final product is owned by industry. To do this we need the input and engagement with industry.
We are seeking the input of all retailers, large and small and from across sectors so that your specific needs can be addressed.

Firstly, we have a review of the literature currently available on the subject of the changing landscape of Australian retail. Secondly, there is a summary of the Retail Futures project methodology and timelines.
